Radical Self-care in trying times

In times of stress and overwhelm we may need some radical self-care. Whether you are overwhelmed by the radical political changes, fearful for yourself, friends, or community, or just plain stressed about making ends meet, dealing with illness and other challenges, I see you. Even if I didn’t list your complaint, I still see you. So many these days are feeling it often for many reasons.


We have so many competing aspects in life lately that can add to stress. 

We need daily: 

  • Rest

  • limits with social media and news

  • supportive community

  • opportunity for nourishing food and company

  • Hobbies

  • and fresh air and movement. 


If you are not getting all of those, just try to address one at a time.

Another suggestion is to start writing feelings daily as you try to process what is going on around you. Here are some ideas:


If you are feeling hopeless about political changes, it can be helpful to be of service. We all have something to give.

  • If you have extra money, are there organizations or people that you know that you could use a little support?


  • If you have extra time and energy, can you volunteer with a political, social service, or other organization? Maybe help a family member, a friend, or a neighbor.


  • If you have limited money or energy, can you write or call political leaders?

  • Or could you write supportive messages to be given to those in need such as at a nursing home?


Other ideas that can help us when we feel powerless is to be engaged in a project. 

  • Does your home need a good cleaning or purging? 

  • Have you been meaning to engage in a hobby or learn a new skill? 

  • When weather permits, tackle an outdoor project or go for a walk.


  • If your energy is low, perhaps putting together a puzzle, drawing or coloring or just listening to an uplifting podcast or watching a light hearted show is needed.


Whatever your feelings, they are valid. If you feel you need extra support, please seek it. You matter!!
